A finisher tames powder to achieve
sometimes fierce, other times subtle
automotive stylings
A fabricator-turned-finisher develops a new coating process to elevate powder from the confines of a
durable basecoat to a topcoat-detailing powerhouse that accentuates automobiles and motorcycles.

Jeruss had built a custom platform
and had a local finisher powder coat
the piece. Jeruss installed the plat-
form on the back of the customer’s
boat, and 4 days later the customer
came to Jeruss because the coating
was falling off. “I took it back to the
finisher, and he gave me 20 million
excuses why it didn’t work,” Jeruss
said . “Pre p w ork is major. If you
do n’t have things p re pp ed right
whether paint or powder coating, it’s
not going to work. I sat down with
my wife, and said, I can’t afford to
build this stuff for people, take it out,
have it powder coated, and put my
name on it not knowing if it is going
to work.”
Paving a new way with powder

P
aul Jeruss built a career upon
the driving demand for inno-

industry. From beginning with the
trucking industry, he created the

serving companies whose drivers
delivered supplies to fast food res-
taurants and had to make deliveries
in tight places. As a result, Jeruss
designed hand trucks with brake
systems tha t enab led drivers to
deliver goods off ramps into cramped
areas, allowing Taco Bells to serve
countless chalupas and Kentucky
Frie d Chi cke n to churn out the

and extra crispy by the bucket full.
Specialty Repair and Sales subsisted
off this for 10 years. At the same time,
other people approached Jeruss to
have him fabricate parts that no one
else was making. As demand for cus-
tom fabrication grew, Jeruss ulti-
mately sold Specialty Repair and
Sales and maintained the custom
fabrication business.
It was also at this time that his fin-
ishing operations, Dynamic Coat-
ings, Stockton Calif., began. In addi-
tion to solutions for truck drivers,
Jeruss built customized swim plat-
forms, towers, and stainless steel
boat railings. The wet marine world

this project, he knew he had developed a new,
commercially viable method for achieving artistic
effects with powder coating.
